Forklifts are essential for many industries and they can be categorized in several ways. When you’re searching for the right forklift, it can be helpful to really know what you’re looking for. Our team at KMC Forklift has put together this brief breakdown of different ways we categorize forklifts.

Categorizing by Size

There are several sizes of forklift, both by width, height, and weight. Standard models are usually between 4 and 7 feet wide and 8 to 10 feet long.On the opposite spectrum, you can get narrow models that are less than 5 feet and rough terrain models that are more than 10 feet.

Categorizing by Tire

You’ll often find two types of tires on a forklift: cushion and pneumatic. Cushion tires are mostly made of solid rubber and work well on smooth surfaces. Pneumatic tires are filled with air and work better when working with large capacities.

Classes of Forklifts

Possibly the best way to categorize a forklift is by its class. There are seven different classes assigned by OSHA, which are set based on the machine’s fuel type and usage.

Class I: Electric Motor Ride Truck

This class of forklift uses electricity and is used in indoor spaces where air quality is a concern.

Class II: Electric Motor Narrow Aisle Truck

In this class, electricity is used and items are moved within narrow spaces.

Class III: Electric Motor Hand Truck

These models are also electric and are used within short distances, primarily for loading delivery trucks.

Class IV: Internal Combustion Engine Trucks with Cushion Tires

This class can be fueled by diesel or gasoline and are used in low-clearance workplaces.

Class V: Internal Combustion Engine Trucks with Pneumatic Tires

These models also use diesel or gasoline, but are ideal for rough surfaces in and outdoors.

Class VI: Electric and Internal Combustion Trucks

This class is powered by battery, gas or diesel and is used for hauling and towing cargo.

Class VII: Rough Terrain Truck

Finally, these models are either gas or diesel and are great for uneven terrain and high elevation lifting.
